Tim . . . not to get all boring or mushy and all . . but I’ve been reading Plato for school the last couple of weeks and he’s got this idea of the forms . . which in a nutshell are the ultimate of all ideals and we are just mere reflections of them here on Earth. Well in one of the dialogues he identifies three forms as indicative of the good life: justice, self-control, and knowledge. I’d think that this meet-up was perfect. Knowledge: you sincerely knew your audience and tried to be as genuine as possible. Self-control: not focusing on your podcast and/or to much on yourself. Justice: well . . . we’ll have to see if you get a call-back . . . LOL . . . . anywise . . I agree with Dave that it was a smart move not to play up your podcast and nothing you indicated in talking with Dan Klass suggests that you were crazy or desperate.

Im a bitterest pill listener that listens to your show because its kind of similar. I dont know anything about hollywood that hasnt happened in Entourage, but I think the meeting went well. Youre gonna eventually have a shot for a part in House, unless it gets abruptly canceled.
However the dunkin donuts coffe was kind of too much. In my expirience giving gifts to almost perfect strangers is always akward. In the best scenario you appear as a guy thats trying to get into the assistant, in the no so best scenario you seem like a fart smeller, and in the worst you just seem desperate.

You may be right re: the coffee but remember, I had met the woman I gave the coffee to and it was a very inexpensive gesture. You may be right though. Hard to know. Also, she isn’t the assistant. Her and the one I met with are pretty much partners. That said, you may be totally right. Oh well.
My only options are “fart smeller” or “desperate”?
Come on! There is a chance she could have totally loved the coffee. Also, that pound of coffee lasted at least a week or two. That means she might have thought about me every day for two weeks.
Gotta stay positive or I’ll go insane.

Tim, I just listened to your House-The Nazi podcast. Excellent. I know it’s difficult to resist a spontaneous attempt at humor like the “Nazi with a heart” thing but it’s in you, sort of a manifestation of your mother’s sense of humor and maybe a little of mine but you recovered well A friend of mine would call that a “feeble attempt at humor”.
I think I’ve signed up fpr a speed dating event with a top age suggestion of 55 but I’ll go and try to bullshit my way through with some 49 year old and see what happens. I won’t make any Viagra jokes. It’ too close to home.
I think I understand the fine line between ambition and desperation. It’s all in the perception. I believe you’ll pull that off properly in an honest sort of way.
Klass’ idea of the skinhead in the care of “House”. He hates him but he is a doctor and he can’t pull the plug…or can he. Write a script and present it.
Well good luck. Don’t give up. I know you wont. Persistance will pay of.

Tim… you got far enough on your own steam, brother. And that IS positive. Like your buddy said, the rest is up to the “professionals”. And, unfortunately, we know very well that learning how to relate to casting directors is an evil mountain that must be scaled in one’s acting career before arriving at the valley of “always dealing directly with producers and directors”. But let me just say a little something about casting directors that your non-industry listeners may not know (and that neither you nor Klass can voice on the air)…
Casting directors are actually the most useless, unnecessary and unimaginative below-the-line bottom dwellers of any production. There is nothing creative about them. They use formula, negotiating, and mixed-unit tactics to get what they need. If they have a talent, it’s knowing which wrapping paper goes the best with which gift. They simply “Taylorize” the system. They’re a filteration device and, ironically, I know Starbuck’s Baristas who went from mixing lattes to being major casting directors within six months. Some of the biggest casting directors in the business were former Soccer Moms. Hustlers. Businesswomen. Some men, but mostly WOMEN. And it’s no accident that many casting directors were former managers or agents (or vice-versa… but that’s another tirade). As a career, it’s usually the means to a quick end — a three rung ladder to a light bulb that can’t be reached. In film, casting directors are an absolute joke, and they almost never make the final decision. If any director had their Utopia, they would never leave the procurement of talent for their work of art to the whimsey of a casting director. But if you have to put a large cast together in a short amount of time (especially lots of little roles), then you pay a Francine Maisler and keep your fingers crossed. In film, directors and producers still have the final say. Commercials are the same way, although the ad agency or “client” have final say. In television, however, because speed is ALWAYS of the essence and directors are simply “hired hands”, casting directors suddenly find themselves with tremendous power, especially when attached to long-running shows. Jaded? You bet. Because it’s a job that would jade an assembly line worker who makes coffee filters. They’re a necessary part of the BUSINESS but have little or nothing to do with the CREATIVE PROCESS. Otherwise, they sure as fuck wouldn’t be JADED.
That’s probably something your listeners have NOT learned from “Entourage”.
