I did the hollywood tango years ago. Only I was a cinematographer/writer. Got very close the the alter of fame and fortune once. very close. I find myself reflecting back on those times. The uphill battle for work. Working on low budget paycheck movies. Sucking it up and watching no talented people fly past me because of who they know and not because of their talent. I was bitter then, but now, I'm older, wiser and wish I had this wisdom back then. A friend once told me what L.A./Hollywood was to him. It was a prostitute. One goes in, gets what you can for the short time we are all alotted to become famous and then you get out. I agreed with him to an extent. It is that but it's how much your personal stock rises as well and as a result the types of "prostitutes" get better. It's about image, it's about who one knows, it's also about how well you know yourself. Love in Hollywood, now that's a different metaphore. I equate it to being a diamond miner in South Africa. You are down 3 miles in a hot, dark shaft, sweaty bodies bumping into each other while you all break your ass trying to find that diamond. When you are young and strong you want the best and brightest one with no flaws. As one gets older, you will see that there are very few of those and you will be happy with any diamond. Until you realize that the flawed diamonds are actually the best. I finally left Hollywood only to find my Diamond elsewhere. It's a rough road out there. I congradulate anyone that can make it, let alone become a "somebody". I honestly wish you so much luck, because I really do know how difficult it can be out there. My days of film are past me now. I wax wimsically from time to time about what would have happened if I stayed. Meh, If I stayed, I wouldn't be with the one I love now. :) All paths are varied.
