Its 1984, and Michael Jackson is king even in Waihau Bay, New Zealand. Here we meet Boy, an 11-year-old who lives on a farm with his gran, a goat, and his younger brother, Rocky. Shortly after Gran leaves for a week, Boys father, Alamein, appears out of the blue. Having imagined a heroic version of his father during his absence, Boy comes face to face with the real version, an incompetent hoodlum who has returned to find a bag of money he buried years before.
This is the best dramatic feature I’ve seen so far at this year’s festival. The picture below is from one of the most heartbreaking and beautiful scenes I’ve seen on film. I’ll do my best to get an interview with writer/director, Taika Waititi.

I’ll watch anything by Taika Watiti (aka taika cohen), if nothing else for his humor + FOTC connections. If you do see either of the Conchords, please get a photo!
No Conchords but I had a nice conversation with Taika and James (the great kid who played “Boy”). Coming soon!
