Sundance 2010 – Boy

It’s 1984, and Michael Jackson is king —even in Waihau Bay, New Zealand. Here we meet Boy, an 11-year-old who lives on a farm with his gran, a goat, and his younger brother, Rocky. Shortly after Gran leaves for a week, Boy’s father, Alamein, appears out of the blue. Having imagined a heroic version of [...]

Sundance 2010 – Teenage Paparazzo

Really enjoyed Adrian Grenier’s (HBO’s Entourage) doc Teenage Paparazzo about 13-year-old paparazzo Austin Visschedyk. Turning the tables on this kid, Grenier stepped on the other side of the lens in an attempt to mentor a teenager obsessed with the lure of the Hollywood lifestyle.
Hoping to land an interview. We’ll see.

Sundance 2010 – Secrets of the Tribe

Saw a fascinating HBO Doc called Secrets of the Tribe this morning. The film challenges the field of anthropology and more specifically those who studied the Yanomami Indians.

Sundance 2010 – happythankyoumoreplease

The final movie of day 1 at Sundance 2010.
Six New Yorkers juggle love, friendship, and adulthood. Written, directed, and starring Josh Radnor.
I didn’t love this movie but it has it’s moments and a couple stand-out performances from Tony Hale and Kate Mara.

Sundance 2010 – Family Affair

A brother makes a documentary on how his three sisters survived severe childhood abuse by their father.
This is probably a movie you’ll never see. But it doesn’t matter. This family needed it and if you get a chance to see it you’ll be glad you did.
I’ll be interviewing the director (brother) in a couple days.

Sundance 2010 – Restrepo

Ever wonder what it’s really like to be in the trenches of war?
Restrepo takes you there in a disturbingly up-close and visceral way as Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington dig in with soldiers in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley.
I’m still reeling from this film and hopefully will be for a long time.

Just saw Nowhere Boy, a biopic of John Lennon’s formative teenage years. I was very moved by this film. Great performances by Aaron Johnson (Lennon), Kristin Scott Thomas, Anne-Marie Duff, and a wonderful Thomas Brodie Sangster as Paul McCartney.
